The origin of the name Herrera
Herrera is an ancient Spanish habitational noble surname derived from herrera (meaning "ironworks" or "smith's forge," from Latin ferraria). Originating during the early Middle Ages in the mountain valleys of Santander and Burgos (Castile), the House of Herrera expanded across Andalusia, Extremadura, and New Spain during the Reconquista. Members of the lineage served as Grandees of Spain, Dukes of Uceda, royal stewards, and military commanders.
The symbolism of the Herrera coat of arms
Rich in Iberian tradition, the Herrera coat of arms features a red shield charged with two golden cauldrons (calderas) and an upright silver banner/pennon, set within a broad golden border (bordure) bearing twelve deep blue horseshoes. In Spanish heraldry, the red field and cauldrons denote military command, grand manorial hospitality, and wealth. The silver banner represents victory in battle, while the golden border charged with twelve blue horseshoes serves as an ancient canting reference to ironworking (herrera), signifying good fortune, knightly horsemanship, and martial readiness. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian nobility rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
