The symbolism of the Castilian house of Hernandez coat of arms
This distinguished version of the Hernandez coat of arms represents the historic "Castilian House," a lineage of notable heritage. The shield is vertically divided—heraldically described as parted per pale—highlighting themes of service and nobility. On the dexter side (viewer’s left), three golden castles set against a red field, known as Gules, symbolize a direct connection to the Kingdom of Castile and the family's role within the Hidalguía, historically responsible for defending territories and maintaining fortifications. The sinister side (viewer’s right) displays three golden fleurs-de-lis on a blue background called Azure, representing “purity of blood” and noble lineage, often associated with royal service in diplomatic and military capacities. The use of Or (gold) throughout the coat of arms reflects generosity and high social standing, while the azure background signifies vigilance and steadfastness.
Artist’s note: Among all the crests I have created, the Hernandez coat of arms prominently employs the medieval motif of 'three' for both visual balance and as a nod to the Holy Trinity: 3 towers, 3 fleurs-de-lis, and 3 plumes rising from the crown.
The origin story of the Hernandez name and notable historical figures
The Hernandez surname is patronymic, meaning "Son of Hernando" (or Fernando), tracing its roots to the Visigothic Germanic words fardi (journey) and nanth (daring). Although the name emerged independently across Spain, the Castilian House version became emblematic for many families who established influence in central Spain during the 14th and 15th centuries. This lineage was formally recognized by the Hidalguía, documented extensively in the Expedientes de Hidalguía of the Royal Chanceries, where families verified noble descent to secure tax exemptions and knighthood.
Noteworthy individuals bearing this name include Gonzalo Hernández de Córdoba (1453–1515), a prominent military strategist known as El Gran Capitán, whose reforms laid foundations for the Spanish Empire’s expansion. Additionally, 16th-century explorer Hernando de Soto (c. 1500–1542) extended the name’s legacy through extensive explorations in North America. The Castilian heraldry became the preferred emblem among Hernandez descendants in the Americas, honoring the administrative and military achievements of their Castilian and Extremaduran ancestors.
