The origin of the name Henry
Henry is an ancient Anglo-Norman, Scottish, and Irish surname derived from the Germanic personal name Heimirich (composed of heim, meaning "home," and ric, meaning "ruler"). Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest and to Scotland and Ireland during the 12th century, families bearing the Henry name established influential estates across Ayrshire, Ulster (Antrim/Derry), and Berkshire. Codified in early administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire.
The symbolism of the Henry coat of arms
Visually balanced and regal, the Henry coat of arms features a shield divided horizontally per fess: the upper deep blue section is charged with a walking argent / silver or white lion (lion passant guardant), while the lower section is divided vertically per pale engrailed in silver and red, bearing a central red rose barbed green. In classical heraldry, the blue chief and silver lion represent loyalty, truth, heroic alertness, and noble command. The lower silver and red field with an engrailed line denotes sincerity, architectural defense, and martial sacrifice, while the red rose symbolises beauty, grace, and enduring fidelity. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland and recorded in the Heralds' Visitations.
