The origin of the name Henderson

Henderson is an iconic Scottish clan surname (Clan Henderson / Clann Eanruig) meaning "son of Henry." Establishing three primary ancestral branches across Scotland—in Dumfriesshire (Fordell in Fife), Caithness, and Glencoe—the clan served as hereditary bodyguards to the MacIain chieftains of Glencoe and held high legal offices as Barons of Fordell. Codified early in Scottish charters, the family held major seats including Fordell Castle.

The symbolism of the Henderson coat of arms

Commanding and aristocratic, the Henderson coat of arms features a red shield charged with three argent / silver or white pile-like indented points issuing horizontally from the side, set beneath a silver upper section (chief) bearing a deep blue crescent moon between two black ermine spots. In Scottish heraldry, the red field and silver indented points symbolise martial valour and fortress defense. The silver chief with a blue crescent and ermine spots denotes enlightenment, hopeful renewal, and unblemished judicial purity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an arm holding a golden five-pointed star surmounted by a blue crescent moon, signifying divine aspiration and continuous family elevation. Below, the motto scroll displays Sola virtus nobilitat, translating to "Virtue alone ennobles." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (1672) for Henderson of Fordell.
