The origin of the name Harvey
Harvey is an ancient Breton and Anglo-Norman surname derived from the personal name Hervé (composed of Breton haer, meaning "battle," and vy, meaning "worthy," translating to "battle-worthy"). Introduced to England during the 1066 Norman Conquest by Breton followers of William the Conqueror, the House of Harvey established premier seats across Essex (Ickworth), Suffolk, and Folkestone (Kent). Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (William Hervi).
The symbolism of the Harvey coat of arms
Commanding and vibrant, the Harvey coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white diagonal band (bend) bearing three green trefoils (shamrocks). In heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage and sacrifice, while the silver bend represents knightly sashes of honour and sincerity. The three green trefoils denote perpetual hope, vitality, and spiritual joy. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a black cat-a-mountain (wildcat / leopard) holding a green trefoil in its paw, an emblem of acute vigilance, untamed agility, and faithful protection. Below, the motto scroll displays Servate fidem cineri, translating to "Keep faith with the dust of your ancestors." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Essex and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
