The origin of the name Hart
Hart is an ancient English, Scottish, and Irish surname of dual origin. In England and Scotland, it is a topographic and nickname surname derived from Old English heorot (meaning "hart" or "stag"); in Ireland, it represents an Anglicised form of Gaelic Ó hAirt, a powerful sept descended from King Cormac mac Airt that ruled ancestral lands in County Meath and Sligo. The family established prominent seats across Devon, Kent, and Connacht. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Edmund le Hert).
The symbolism of the Hart coat of arms
Richly symbolic and canting, the Hart coat of arms features a shield divided per chevron in deep blue and red, charged with three golden stags walking (harts trippant: two in chief, one in base). In classical heraldry, the division of blue and red symbolises loyalty, truth, and martial fortitude, while the three golden stags serve as a canting symbol (hart) representing forest lordship, harmony, swift alertness, and peace. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden stag trippant standing over an ancient Roman fasces (bound bundle of rods with an axe), representing lawful authority, unity, and justice balanced with peace. Below, the motto scroll displays Via una cor unum, translating to "One way, one heart." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Kent and registered in the Ulster Office of Arms.
