The origin of the name Harrison
Harrison is an ancient English patronymic surname meaning "son of Harry" (the medieval vernacular form of Henry, derived from Germanic Heimirich, meaning "home-ruler"). Expanding rapidly across Yorkshire, Lancashire, Cumberland, and Northamptonshire during the 14th century, families bearing the Harrison name served as estate stewards, civic magistrates, and parliamentary leaders. Codified early in administrative records, the name appears in the 1379 Poll Tax of Yorkshire (Hugh Harrison).
The symbolism of the Harrison coat of arms
Visually striking and regal, the Harrison coat of arms features a red shield charged with a central golden eagle displayed with spread wings, set beneath a golden upper section (chief). In classical heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial valour, sacrifice, and fortitude, while the golden eagle displayed represents imperial dignity, high intellect, keen vision, and noble leadership. The golden chief denotes authority and generosity of mind. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green serpent entwined around a broken golden column, symbolising wisdom, renewal, resilience, and overcoming adversity through endurance. Below, the motto scroll displays Vincit qui patitur, translating to "He conquers who endures." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and Lancashire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
