The origin of the name Hardy
Hardy (Hardie) is an ancient Norman, English, and Scottish surname derived from the Old French adjective hardi (meaning "bold," "courageous," or "daring"). Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the lineage established influential manorial estates across Dorset (Portisham), Yorkshire, and the Scottish Lowlands (Dalmarny). Codified early in feudal administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Buckinghamshire (William Hardi).
The symbolism of the Hardy coat of arms
Commanding and defensive, the Hardy coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad central deep blue cross, set between four black walking boars (boars passant). In classical heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the deep blue cross represents loyalty, truth, and unyielding Christian faith. The four black boars denote fierce bravery, acute vigilance, and unyielding defense of clan lands. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a silver eagle's head between red wings, holding a red rose in its beak—symbolising high intellect, noble ambition, beauty, and grace under trial. Below, the motto scroll displays Arme de foi hardy, translating to "Armed with hardy faith." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Dorset and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
