The origin of the name Hanson

Hanson is an ancient English patronymic surname meaning "son of Han" (a medieval pet form of Henry or John). Rooted in Yorkshire (specifically Woodhouse and Rastrick) since the 14th century, the family descended from John de Rastrick, whose son Henry was called "Han." The family established prominent manorial seats across Yorkshire, Lancashire, and Cumberland, serving as local magistrates and landholders. Codified in early administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1379 Poll Tax of Yorkshire (William Hanson).

The symbolism of the Hanson coat of arms

Visually balanced, the Hanson coat of arms features a field divided horizontally per fess: the upper black section is charged with three argent / silver or white lions rampant, while the lower silver section features three black lozenges/diamonds in fess. In heraldry, the contrast of black and silver denotes wisdom, constancy, and judicial purity. The three silver lions symbolise heroic bravery, leadership, and noble standing, while the black lozenges represent structural strength and dignity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a black lion rampant holding a silver lozenge. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
