The origin of the name Hansen
Hansen is an ancient Scandinavian patronymic surname meaning "son of Hans" (a shortened form of Johannes, derived from Hebrew Yochanan, meaning "God is gracious"). Widespread across Denmark, Norway, Schleswig-Holstein, and Baltic trading ports, families bearing the Hansen name served as patrician merchants, naval officers, and civic magistrates throughout Northern Europe.
The symbolism of the Hansen coat of arms
Visually striking and refined, the Hansen coat of arms features a field divided vertically per pale in deep blue and gold, charged with two counterchanged fleurs-de-lis (a golden fleur-de-lis on the blue section, and a blue fleur-de-lis on the gold section). In classical heraldry, the division of blue and gold symbolises loyalty, truth, generosity, and elevation of mind. The two counterchanged fleurs-de-lis represent grace, purity, noble alignment, and continuous growth across generations.
