The origin of the name Hanlon
Hanlon (O'Hanlon) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó hAnluain, stemming from anluan (meaning "great champion" or "hero"). The Ó hAnluain sept were dynastic royal lords of Orior in County Armagh, holding the hereditary title of Hereditary Standard Bearers of Ulster to the Kings of Ulster. Ruling eastern Armagh from their medieval castles at Tandragee and Loughgilly, the clan was recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters.
The symbolism of the Hanlon coat of arms
Commanding and noble, the Hanlon coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a central walking argent / silver or white boar powdered with black ermine spots. In Gaelic heraldry, the green field symbolises the rich soil of Ireland, hope, and territorial renewal. The silver ermine boar represents fierce bravery, ancient hospitality, and unblemished judicial purity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green lizard or salamander walking on a crest wreath. Below, the motto scroll displays Sine macula, translating to "Without stain." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms for O'Hanlon of Orior and catalogued in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.
