The origin of the name Hall

Hall is an ancient English and Scottish topographic and status surname derived from Old English heall (meaning "manorial hall" or "spacious residence"). Originally assumed by individuals residing near or holding official administrative positions within a lordly hall, the family established influential seats across Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Durham, and the Scottish Borders. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Warin de la Halle).

The symbolism of the Hall coat of arms

Visually balanced and watchful, the Hall coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad black chevron set between three black talbots' (or wolves') heads erased. In classical heraldry, the silver shield denotes sincerity and peace, while the black chevron represents architectural defense and manorial protection. The three black talbot heads symbolise courageous fidelity, acute vigilance, and untamed loyalty to clan and country. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a white wolf's head erased out of a golden coronet. Below, the motto scroll displays Vive ut vivas, translating to "Live that you may live." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and Lincolnshire and registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland.

Historical figures

Edward Hall (c. 1497–1547): Tudor lawyer, historian, and Member of Parliament who authored Hall's Chronicle.
Lady Anne Hall (16th Century): English noblewoman recorded in Yorkshire land charters.
Sir James Hall of Dunglass (1761–1832): Celebrated Scottish geologist, geophysicist, and politician.
