The origin of the name Hale
Hale is an ancient English habitational and topographic surname derived from Old English halh (meaning "nook of land" or "valley estate"). Prominent lineages established influential manorial seats across Gloucestershire (Alderley), Hertfordshire, Kent, and Hampshire following the 1066 Norman Conquest. Sir Matthew Hale, Lord Chief Justice of England, brought the family line to national legal prominence during the 17th century. Codified in early administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Norfolk (Richard de la Hale).
The symbolism of the Hale coat of arms
Commanding and protective, the Hale coat of arms features a field divided vertically per pale in deep blue and red, charged with a golden chevron set between three golden arrows pointing downward. In classical heraldry, the division of blue and red symbolises loyalty, truth, martial fortitude, and sacrifice. The golden chevron represents architectural protection and knightly defense, while the three downward arrows denote readiness, swift justice, and family unity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an arm in steel armor holding three golden arrows. Below, the motto scroll displays Cum principibus, translating to "With princes." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Gloucestershire and Hertfordshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
