The origin of the name Hail

Hail (Haile / Hailes) is an ancient English and Scottish topographic and habitational surname derived from Old English healh (meaning "nook," "secluded valley," or "manorial estate"). Originating in Gloucestershire (Hailes Abbey) and East Lothian (Hailes Castle in Scotland), families bearing the name established influential manorial seats and served as local magistrates throughout the medieval period. Codified early in administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Somerset (John de Hailes).

The symbolism of the Hail coat of arms

Visually pure and martial, the Hail coat of arms features a vibrant red shield charged with three upright golden arrows with white fletching, arranged side by side. In classical heraldry, the red field symbolises martial valour, courage, and sacrifice, while the three upright golden arrows represent military precision, readiness for defense, and swift execution of duty. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an arm in steel armor holding a golden arrow aloft. Below, the motto scroll displays Vera sequor, translating to "I follow truth." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Gloucestershire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

Mary Hail (17th Century): Gentlewoman and benefactor recorded in Gloucestershire parish registers.
Lord David Dalrymple, Lord Hailes (1726–1792): Celebrated Scottish judge, historian, and advocate.
