The origin of the name Guerrero

Guerrero is an ancient Spanish occupational and descriptive noble surname derived from guerrero (meaning "warrior" or "soldier," from Germanic werra). Originating during the early Middle Ages in Castile, La Mancha, and Andalusia, the lineage traces back to knightly commanders who earned distinction defending frontier fortresses during the Reconquista. The House of Guerrero established major seats across Seville, Extremadura, and New Spain.

The symbolism of the Guerrero coat of arms

Visually striking and martial, the Guerrero coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad diagonal golden band (bend), out of which emerge two green dragons' heads (engouled). In Iberian heraldry, the red field symbolises martial courage, sacrifice, and fortitude, while the golden bend denotes knightly sashes of honour. The two green dragons' heads represent formidable strength, tactical power, and ferocious protection of territory. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green dragon holding a silver sword. Below, the motto scroll displays Ave Maria Gratia Plena, translating to "Hail Mary, full of grace." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Castilian and Andalusian nobility rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Doña Maria Guerrero (17th Century): Spanish noblewoman and philanthropist recorded in Seville charters.
Vicente Guerrero (1782–1831): Legendary Mexican revolutionary general and 2nd President of Mexico.
