The origin of the name Gregory
Gregory is an ancient English and Scottish patronymic surname derived from the Greek personal name Gregorios (meaning "watchful" or "vigilant"). Introduced to Britain following the Crusades and the Norman Conquest, the name became prominent across Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Aberdeenshire. In Scotland, Clan Gregory (Clann Griogair) established respected academic and medical dynasties, holding ancestral estates at Kinnairdy and Asntead. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Bedfordshire (Peter Gregory).
The symbolism of the Gregory coat of arms
Visually commanding, the Gregory coat of arms features a gold shield charged in chief with a walking deep blue lion (lion passant), set above two deep blue horizontal bands (fesses/bars) in base. In classical heraldry, the gold field symbolises generosity and noble elevation, while the blue lion represents heroic courage, loyalty, and vigilance. The blue horizontal bars denote knightly sashes of honour and structural fortitude. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing black boar. Below, the motto scroll displays Vigilanter, translating to "Vigilantly." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Nottinghamshire, registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Gregory of Kinnairdy, and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
