The origin of the name Green

Green (Greene) is an ancient English topographic surname derived from Old English grēne, referring to an original ancestor who resided near a village green or grassy manorial common. Prominent seats were established across Northamptonshire (Greens Norton), Yorkshire, and Essex following the Norman Conquest. Codified in early feudal administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (De la Grene).

The symbolism of the Green coat of arms

Visually serene, the Green coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three golden stags walking (trippant). In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the three golden stags denote harmony, forest lordship, swiftness, and peace. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a stag's head. Below, the motto scroll displays Virtus semper viridis, translating to "Virtue is ever green."

Earliest evidence of the Green family coat of arms

During the 1350s, when Lord Chief Justice Sir Henry Greene acquired the manor of Norton (subsequently renamed Greens Norton), official legal property deeds and his armorial seals recorded the family's arms as three gold bucks (stags) set in full stride (trippant).

The 1564 Heraldic Visitation of Northamptonshire, conducted by Clarenceux King of Arms, William Harvey, was a Tudor era royal survey that includes a description for the Green coat of arms as having three gold stags on a blue shield.

15th-Century Tomb Brasses: The earliest surviving physical evidence appears at St. Bartholomew’s Church in Greens Norton, Northamptonshire. The altar tomb and monumental brasses of Sir Thomas Grene (d. 1462) feature carved shields displaying the three bucks.
