The origin of the name Gray

Gray (Grey) is an ancient Anglo-Norman, English, and Scottish noble surname derived from the place name Croy or Gray in Haute-Saône, France. Introduced to England during the 1066 Norman Conquest by Anschetil de Gray, the lineage expanded into Scotland during the 12th century, establishing the Barony of Chillingham in Northumberland and Lord Gray of Broxmouth in Perthshire. The family held vast manorial estates and produced prominent statesmen, judges, and military leaders.

The symbolism of the Gray coat of arms

Commanding and protective, the Gray coat of arms features a red shield set within an engrailed argent / silver or white border (bordure), charged with a central silver lion rampant. In heraldry, the red field and engrailed silver border symbolise martial courage, strength, and protective boundaries, while the central silver lion represents supreme bravery, heroism, and noble leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden anchor. Below, the motto scroll displays Anchor fast. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Northumberland, registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland for Lord Gray, and catalogued in Burke's Peerage.

Historical figures

Lady Mary Gray (16th Century): English noblewoman and courtier recorded in Tudor royal rolls.
Stephen Gray (1666–1736): Celebrated English scientist and pioneer in the field of electricity.
