The origin of the name Graham
Graham is a legendary Anglo-Norman and Scottish clan surname (Clan Graham) derived from Grantham in Lincolnshire, England. Sir William de Graham witnessed King David I's charter establishing Holyrood Abbey in 1128, bringing the lineage to Scotland. Settling in Stirlingshire, Angus, and Perthshire, the family rose to supreme aristocracy as Earls of Menteith and Dukes of Montrose, commanding major fortresses including Mugdock Castle.
The symbolism of the Graham coat of arms
Visually pure and aristocratic, the Graham coat of arms features a gold shield with a black upper section (chief) charged with three golden escallop shells. In classical heraldry, the gold field and black chief symbolise generosity, elevation of mind, wisdom, and constancy. The three golden escallop shells denote sacred pilgrimage, honorable journeys, and architectural grace. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden eagle preying on a silver heron. Below, the motto scroll displays Ne oublie, translating from French to "Do not forget." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (1672) for the Dukes of Montrose and Chiefs of Clan Graham.

Sir John de Graham (d. 1298): Right-hand military commander to William Wallace who fell at the Battle of Falkirk.
Lady Mary Graham (17th Century): Scottish noblewoman and benefactor recorded in Stirlingshire estate rolls.
