The origin of the name Grady

Grady (O'Grady) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Gráda, stemming from gráda (meaning "noble" or "illustrious"). The Ó Gráda sept were royal Dalcassian princes centered in County Clare (Killaloe) and County Limerick (Kilballyowen). Renowned as clan chieftains, scholars, and churchmen, the family held major medieval strongholds along the River Shannon and was recorded extensively in early Irish monastic records.

The symbolism of the Grady coat of arms

Commanding and martial, the Grady coat of arms features a shield divided vertically per pale in red and black, charged with three silver and golden lions passant counterchanged. In heraldry, the per pale division of red and black symbolises martial fortitude, sacrifice, wisdom, and constancy, while the three counterchanged lions represent heroic courage, noble authority, and unyielding watchfulness. Below, the motto scroll displays Vulneratus non victus, translating to "Wounded but not vanquished." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms for O'Grady of Kilballyowen, County Limerick, and recorded in Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland.

Historical figures

John Ó Gráda (d. 1372): Archbishop of Cashel recorded in early Irish ecclesiastical annals.
Finola Ó Gráda (16th Century): Clare noblewoman recorded in regional Gaelic land inquisitions.
Standish O'Grady, 1st Viscount Guillamore (1766–1840): Famed Irish barrister and Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer in Ireland.
