The origin of the name Gordon
Gordon is an iconic Anglo-Norman and Scottish clan surname (Clan Gordon) originating in the parish of Gordon in Berwickshire (Scottish Borders). Granted ancestral lands in Strathbogie (Aberdeenshire) by King Robert the Bruce in the 14th century, the family expanded into the Scottish Highlands, becoming known as the "Gordons of Huntly" and ruling vast northern territories. As Earls and Marquesses of Huntly, the Chiefs of Gordon played pivotal roles in Scottish royal governance and military history.
The symbolism of the Gordon coat of arms
Visually bold and noble, the Gordon coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three golden boars' heads erased. In classical Scottish heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty, truth, and devotion, while the three golden boars' heads represent fierce bravery, knightly hospitality, and forest lordship over clan lands. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a stag's head. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (1672) for Gordon of Huntly and catalogued in Stodart's Scottish Arms.
