Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Gomes

Gomes is an ancient Portuguese noble patronymic surname meaning "son of Gomo" (derived from the Visigothic personal name Guma, meaning "man"). Originating during the early Middle Ages in the northern provinces of Entre Douro e Minho and Beira, the House of Gomes held extensive feudal manors, contributed knightly commanders to royal armies during the Reconquista, and produced legendary navigators during Portugal's 15th-century Age of Discovery.

The symbolism of the Gomes coat of arms

Serene and sacred, the Portuguese Gomes coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a central golden pelican in her piety (vulning her breast to feed her young with her own blood in a woven nest). In Iberian heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty, truth, and devotion to the crown, while the golden pelican represents supreme self-sacrifice, maternal protection, and noble affection for clan and country. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in official Portuguese nobility registers (Armorial Geral de Portugal) and preserved in the Livro do Armeiro-Mór.

Historical figures

Diogo Gomes (c. 1420–c. 1502): Celebrated Portuguese navigator, explorer, and writer under Prince Henry the Navigator.
Fernão Gomes (15th Century): Wealthy Lisbon merchant and explorer granted royal monopoly over the Gulf of Guinea trade.
Dona Guiomar Gomes (16th Century): Portuguese noblewoman and benefactor recorded in Lisbon charters.
