The origin of the name Gilbert

Gilbert is an ancient Anglo-Norman and Welsh surname derived from the Germanic personal name Giselbert (composed of gisil, meaning "pledge" or "hostage," and berht, meaning "bright" or "famous"). Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest, the Gilbert family established premier knightly seats across Devon (Compton Castle), Cornwall, and South Wales. Codified in early feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire (William Gilbert).

The symbolism of the Gilbert coat of arms

Visually striking, the Gilbert coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad red chevron bearing three argent / silver or white roses. In heraldry, the silver shield denotes sincerity, while the red chevron represents architectural protection and knightly defense. The three silver roses symbolise purity, joy, and grace. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red squirrel holding an acorn, an emblem of industrious foresight and forest guardianship. Below, the motto scroll displays Teg yw heddwch, translating from Welsh to "Peace is fair." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Devon and Cornwall and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

Sir Humphrey Gilbert (c. 1539–1583): Famed Elizabethan explorer, navigator, and founder of the first English colony in North America (Newfoundland).
Lady Anne Gilbert (16th Century): English noblewoman recorded in Devon estate rolls.
William Gilbert (1544–1603): Physician to Queen Elizabeth I and pioneer scientist who discovered terrestrial magnetism.
