The origin of the name Gibson
Gibson is an ancient Scottish and English patronymic surname meaning "son of Gibb" (a medieval pet form of Gilbert, meaning "bright pledge"). Clan Gibson (Clann Guibne) established early ancestral seats in Fife, Midlothian, and along the Scottish Borders during the 14th century, where they served as Senators of the College of Justice, landholders, and civic leaders. Codified early in Scottish administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1379 Yorkshire Poll Tax (Johannes Gibbon).
The symbolism of the Gibson coat of arms
Deeply symbolic and sacred, the Gibson coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three argent / silver or white pelicans feeding their young with their own blood (pelicans in their piety). In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty and steadfast faith, while the three silver pelicans represent self-sacrificing affection, maternal devotion, and unyielding protection of family and clan. Below, the motto scroll displays Recte et fideliter, translating to "Rightly and faithfully." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (1672) and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
