The origin of the name George
George is an ancient English, Welsh, and Anglo-Norman surname derived from the Greek personal name Georgios (composed of ge, earth, and ergon, work, meaning "earth-worker" or "farmer"). Brought to Britain following the Crusades and the 1066 Norman Conquest, the name became deeply revered through Saint George, patron saint of England. Prominent lineages established ancestral seats across Pembrokeshire (Wales), Cornwall, and London. Codified early in administrative records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Robert George).
The symbolism of the George coat of arms
Visually refined, the George coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a central deep blue horizontal band (fess) bearing three golden roundels (bezants) charged with lion heads, set between three blue swallows (two in chief, one in base). In heraldry, the silver shield denotes sincerity and peace, while the blue fess and golden bezants represent loyalty, truth, and honorable stewardship. The blue swallows symbolise swift alertness and peaceful travel. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of London and Cornwall and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
