The origin of the name Gauthier

Gauthier (Gautier) is an ancient French surname derived from the Germanic personal name Waldhar (composed of wald, meaning "rule," and heri, meaning "army," translating to "army commander"). Originating during the early Middle Ages across Normandy, Burgundy, and Île-de-France, families bearing the Gauthier name established prominent manorial fiefs, merchant guilds, and civic magistracies. During the 17th century, members of the family emigrated to New France (Quebec), founding influential North American lineages.

The symbolism of the Gauthier coat of arms

Commanding and balanced, the Gauthier coat of arms features a gold shield charged with a broad central red horizontal band (fess), set between six blue and white swallows or martlets (three in chief, three in base). In classical heraldry, the gold shield symbolises generosity and noble elevation, while the red fess represents martial valour and knightly sashes of honour. The six swallows denote swiftness, elegance, and continuous journey. Below, the motto scroll displays À chacun sa vu, translating from French to "To each his vision." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in French regional armorial registers (Armorial Général de France) and preserved in early French-Canadian historical rolls.

Marie Gauthier (17th Century): Early French-Canadian pioneer matriarch recorded in Quebec parish charters.
