The origin of the name Garza

Garza (de la Garza) is an ancient Spanish and Galician habitational noble surname derived from garza (meaning "heron"). Originating in the medieval Kingdom of Galicia and Castile, the lineage traces back to knightly commanders who held feudal lordships along coastal and river territories. In the 16th century, Marcos Alonso de la Garza y del Cón brought the lineage to New Spain, establishing one of the founding patriarchies of Nuevo León (Mexico) and Texas.

The symbolism of the Garza coat of arms

Visually distinctive and canting, the Garza coat of arms features a field divided vertically per pale: the left (dexter) section displays a deep blue field charged with a standing golden heron (garza), while the right (sinister) section features an argent / silver or white field charged with six deep blue roundels (hurts). In Iberian heraldry, the blue field and golden heron symbolise loyalty, vigilant watchfulness, water lordship, and ancestral canting tenure. The silver field and blue roundels represent sincerity, peace, and clear springs. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Galician and Castilian nobility rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
