The origin of the name Garrett

Garrett is an ancient English, Anglo-Norman, and Irish surname derived from the Germanic personal names Gerard or Gerald (composed of gar, spear, and hard, brave/mighty). Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest and to Ireland during the 12th century, families bearing the Garrett name established prominent seats in Essex, Kent, and across Leinster and Munster. Codified in early administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (William Garret).

The symbolism of the Garrett coat of arms

Visually striking and regal, the Garrett coat of arms features an argent / silver or white field charged with black ermine spots, set beneath a central deep blue horizontal band (fess) bearing a golden lion passant. In classical heraldry, the silver field with ermine spots denotes high judicial purity, sincerity, and noble dignity. The deep blue fess and golden lion symbolise loyalty, truth, heroic courage, and noble leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing golden lion holding a green shamrock in its paw, reflecting ancestral connection to Ireland. Below, the motto scroll displays Semper Fidelis, translating to "Always Faithful." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms and recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Essex.

Historical figures

Mary Garrett (17th Century): Gentlewoman and benefactor recorded in Essex estate rolls.
Thomas Garrett (1789–1871): Famed American abolitionist and Underground Railroad leader of Anglo-Irish descent.
