The origin of the name Garner

Garner is an ancient English surname of dual origin: either derived from Old French grenier / gardener ("keeper of the granary" or storehouse) or as a contracted form of Gardiner. Prominent across Warwickshire, Lancashire, and Cheshire following the Norman Conquest, master garners managed essential feudal agricultural reserves and estate stores. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire (Ranulph le Garner).

The symbolism of the Garner coat of arms

Rich in natural and martial symbolism, the Garner coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with an argent / silver or white fleur-de-lis in chief, an upright diagonal silver sword in bend, and a golden acorn with green oak leaves in base. In classical heraldry, the blue shield represents loyalty and truth, while the silver fleur-de-lis symbolises grace and noble service. The silver sword denotes justice and defense, while the acorn and oak leaves signify ancient strength, endurance, and continuous growth. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden griffin head between wings. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Warwickshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
