The origin of the name Gardner

Gardner is an ancient English and Scottish occupational surname (a variant of Gardiner) derived from Middle English gardener. Establishing early manorial estates across London, Lancashire, Gloucestershire, and the Scottish Borders, families bearing the Gardner name served as estate managers, civic magistrates, and naval commanders. Codified in early administrative records, the name appears in the 1379 Poll Tax of Yorkshire (William Gardner).

The symbolism of the Gardner coat of arms

Visually complex and protective, the Gardner coat of arms features a black shield charged with an argent / silver or white chevron bearing black ermine spots, set between two golden griffin heads erased in chief and a golden cross moline in base. In heraldry, the black shield denotes wisdom and dignity, while the silver ermine chevron represents judicial purity and architectural protection. The golden griffin heads signify acute vigilance and courage, while the gold cross moline symbolises unyielding Christian faith. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of London and Lancashire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

Thomas Gardner (c. 1592–1674): Early English settler and Overseer of the Salem Plantation in Massachusetts.
Susannah Gardner / Lady Alan Gardner (18th Century): British noblewoman recorded in naval family archives.
