Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Gagnon

Gagnon is an ancient French noble surname derived from Old French gagnon (referring to a fierce guard dog or watch-dog, or stemming from gagner, "to cultivate land"). Establishing early medieval seats across Normandy, Touraine, and Brittany, the House of Gagnon held manorial fiefs and civic appointments. Three Gagnon brothers—Mathurin, Jean, and Pierre—emigrated to Quebec in the 1630s, founding one of the most prominent colonial lineages in French North America.

The symbolism of the Gagnon coat of arms

Serene and spiritual, the Gagnon coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a central golden dove holding a green olive branch in its beak, set above an argent / silver or white crescent moon in base. In heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty and peace, while the central golden dove with an olive branch represents divine grace, hope, and good tidings. The silver crescent moon denotes enlightenment, ancestral renewal, and watchfulness. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in Norman armorial registers (Armorial de Normandie) and recorded in early New France history rolls.

Historical figures

Mathurin Gagnon (1606–1690): Early French merchant, pioneer, and community leader who established trade posts in Quebec.
Marguerite Gagnon (17th Century): Benefactor and matriarch recorded in early Quebec colonial charters.
Luc-Antoine Gagnon (18th Century): French-Canadian militia officer and magistrate.
