The origin of the name Fuller

Fuller is an ancient English occupational surname derived from Middle English fullere (from Old English fullere, meaning one who cleanses and thickens raw woven wool). Essential to medieval Britain's prosperous cloth industry, master fullers held influential positions in trade guilds and municipal governance. The lineage established prominent seats across Sussex, Hampshire, and the Isle of Wight following the Norman Conquest. Codified in early administrative rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Kent (Reginald le Fuller).

The symbolism of the Fuller coat of arms

Visually distinctive, the Fuller coat of arms features a field striped horizontally with red and argent / silver or white barry lines, charged in the upper left corner (canton) with a red square bearing a golden five-pointed star (mullet). In classical heraldry, the barry stripes of red and silver symbolise martial fortitude, integrity, and peace, while the red canton and golden star denote special military distinction, divine guidance, and noble favor. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a burning beacon or fire basket on a tripod, representing watchfulness and guidance. Below, the motto scroll displays Fermiora futura, translating to "Future things are more secure." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the Heralds' Visitations of Sussex and Hampshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
