The origin of the name Freeman
Freeman is an ancient English status surname derived from Old English freomann (meaning a free-born man or landholder not bound in feudal serfdom). Holding respected standing in medieval English society, families bearing the Freeman name established early manorial seats across Northamptonshire, Oxfordshire, Yorkshire, and Gloucestershire. Codified early in administrative records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Norfolk (Geoffrey le Freman).
The symbolism of the Freeman coat of arms
Visually pure and bold, the Freeman coat of arms features a vibrant red shield charged with three argent / silver or white lozenges (mascles/diamonds). In classical heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial valour, fortitude, and sacrifice, while the three silver lozenges represent high judicial purity, structural strength, and noble dignity. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a red lion rampant holding a silver lozenge in its paws. Below, the motto scroll displays Libre et audax, translating from French to "Free and bold." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
