The Origin of the Name Frazier

Frazier is an established spelling variation of Fraser, a clan of Anglo-Norman origin first documented in Scotland around 1160 when Simon Fraser held lands in East Lothian. The family expanded into Tweeddale, Aberdeenshire, and the Scottish Highlands, establishing major branches at Philorth and Lovat. The name derives from the French word fraise, meaning strawberry.

The Symbolism of the Frazier Coat of Arms

The coat of arms uses a quartered shield layout. The first and fourth quarters display three silver fraises (cinquefoils or five-petaled strawberry blossoms) on a blue field, serving as a historic armorial reference to the surname. The second and third quarters feature three red antique crowns on silver, representing the Lordship of Lovat. The crest depicts a stag's head, and the scroll carries the Old French motto, "Je suis prest" ("I am ready").

Earliest Recorded Evidence:

• Written & Seal Record: The earliest documented seal featuring the Fraser fraises belongs to William Fraser, Bishop of St. Andrews, attached to state documents in 1292. The Fraser arms are recorded in the Falkirk Roll of Arms (1298) for Sir Simon Fraser. The quartered arms incorporating the three red crowns of Lovat appear in 15th-century armorial manuscripts, including the Scots Roll (c. 1455).
• Physical Carving: Heraldic panels showing the Fraser arms are carved into the stonework at Castle Fraser (Aberdeenshire, constructed 1575) and preserved in historic remnants at Lovat Castle (Inverness-shire).

Historical Figures

Notable figures include Sir Simon Fraser (d. 1306), military commander during the Scottish Wars of Independence; Simon Fraser, 11th Lord Lovat (c. 1667–1747), Highland chieftain during the Jacobite risings; and General Simon Fraser (1726–1782), founder of the 78th (Fraser's) Highlanders regiment.
