Francis is an ancient Anglo-Norman and Welsh surname derived from the Old French personal and ethnic name Franceis (meaning "Frenchman" or "free man"). Introduced to Britain following the Norman Conquest of 1066, the family established prominent knightly seats across Derbyshire (Foremark and Netherseal), Devon, and the Welsh Marches. Codified in early administrative rolls, the surname appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Richard le Francais).
