About the Davis surname and coat of arms

Prolific name worldwide, is of early Christian, Welsh-Celtic origins. It is derived from the patronymic Welsh naming tradition and denotes someone who’s father’s name was David, from the Hebrew name meaning ‘beloved’. Variations of this surname include Davies, Davie, Davi, Davey, Davy, Divis, Davison, among others.

From 1535 onwards in Wales, the adoption of fixed surnames, to conform to English naming conventions, was influenced by the integration of the Welsh legal system into English Common Law. This shift resulted in a limited number of surnames in Wales.
