Symbolism of the Fox family crest

Origin of the surname Fox

In Ireland, the surname Fox is the direct English translation of the ancient Gaelic family name O'Sionnaigh, which comes from the word Sionnach, meaning "Fox." This family line claims direct descent from Maine, one of the sons of Niall of the Nine Hostages, the legendary 5th-century High King of Ireland. The head of the clan historically held the unique, legally recognized title of "The Fox" and ruled as the Lords of Kilcoursey in County Westmeath. This specific coat of arms was formally recognized under the modern legal system in 1611 when it was confirmed to Sir Patrick Fox, a high-ranking government official in Dublin. This official registration followed a peace agreement between King James I and Hubert Fox, the traditional Irish clan chief, permanently securing this legendary lineage in Irish history books.
