The origin of the name Fowler
Fowler is an ancient English occupational surname derived from Old English fugelere (meaning "bird-catcher" or "fowler"). In medieval feudal society, royal and manorial fowlers maintained essential hunting grounds and provided wild game for noble households. Families holding the Fowler name established early manorial estates across Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire, and Staffordshire following the 1066 Norman Conquest. Codified early in feudal rolls, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire (John le Fowler).
The symbolism of the Fowler coat of arms
Commanding and regal, the Fowler coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three golden lions passant guardant (walking while facing forward), set around a central golden chevron bearing three black cross crosslets. In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty, truth, and faith, while the golden lions represent heroic courage and royal favor. The golden chevron and black cross crosslets denote architectural protection, wisdom, and unyielding Christian devotion. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing white owl, an emblem of profound wisdom and acute vigilance. Below, the motto scroll displays Sapiens qui vigilat, translating to "Wise is he who watches." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Gloucestershire and Buckinghamshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
