The origin of the name Flynn

Flynn (O'Flynn) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Floinn, stemming from flann, meaning "red" or "ruddy-complexioned." The Ó Floinn septs established three powerful independent territories in Ireland: in Munster (Lords of Muskerry in County Cork), Connacht (County Roscommon), and Ulster (Lords of Turtle in County Antrim). Renowned as clan chieftains, scholars, and churchmen, the family held major medieval strongholds and was recorded extensively in early Irish annals.

The symbolism of the Flynn coat of arms

Commanding and vigilant, the Flynn coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a walking argent / silver or white wolf (or hound), set beneath three golden roundels in chief each bearing a wolf's head. In classical heraldry, the blue shield symbolises loyalty and truth, while the central silver wolf represents fierce bravery, vigilance, and unyielding protection of clan lands. The three golden roundels with wolf heads denote ancient nobility, wisdom, and leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a hand holding a serpent. Below, the motto scroll displays Honor praemium virtutis est, translating to "Honor is the reward of virtue." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms and catalogued in historic Irish armorial registries.
