The origin of the name Fletcher
Fletcher is an ancient English and Scottish occupational surname derived from Old French flechier (meaning "arrow-maker," from fleche, arrow). Essential to medieval military defense, master fletchers held highly respected standing in feudal society and craft guilds. The surname became widely established across Warwickshire, Leicestershire, and the Scottish Highlands, where Clan Fletcher (Clann Mac an Fleisgeir) held early ancestral lands in Glenorchy, Argyllshire.
The symbolism of the Fletcher coat of arms
Visually pure and martial, the Fletcher coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad central black cross, set between four black roundels each containing a silver arrow-point (pheon). In heraldry, the silver shield denotes sincerity and peace, while the black cross represents wisdom, constancy, and unyielding faith. The four pheons symbolise archery craft, military precision, and readiness for defense. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays an archer drawing a bow. Below, the motto scroll displays Recta Pete, translating to "Seek straight things." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Warwickshire, registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland, and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
