The origin of the name Fleming

Fleming is an ancient ethnic and noble surname indicating an original ancestor who hailed from the Duchy of Flanders (modern-day Belgium). Settling in England, Scotland, and Ireland following the 1066 Norman Conquest, families bearing the Fleming name rose to premier feudal standing. In Scotland, they held the Barony of Biggar and Earlldom of Wigtown; in Ireland, Sir Richard Fleming was created Baron of Slane in County Meath in 1192, where the family held vast estates along the River Boyne.

The symbolism of the Fleming coat of arms

Commanding and watchful, the Fleming coat of arms features a red shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white chevron set between three white owls. In classical heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial valour and fortitude, while the silver chevron represents architectural defense and knightly protection. The three white owls denote profound wisdom, acute vigilance, and spiritual discernment. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms for the Barons Slane and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.
