The origin of the name Fitzgerald
Fitzgerald (FitzGerald) is a legendary Hiberno-Norman surname meaning "son of Gerald" (from Anglo-Norman Fitz, son, and Germanic Gerald). Introduced to Ireland during the 1169 invasion by Maurice FitzGerald, the House of FitzGerald established the premier noble dynasties of Ireland: the Earls of Kildare ("Geraldines") and the Earls of Desmond. Ruling vast lordships across Leinster and Munster, the family became famously known as "more Irish than the Irish themselves" (Hibernicis ipsis Hiberniciores).
The symbolism of the Fitzgerald coat of arms
Iconic in Irish history, the Fitzgerald coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad central red saltire cross (the Geraldine Saltire). In heraldry, the silver shield symbolises sincerity and peace, while the red saltire cross represents martial valour, fortitude, and supreme military leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a standing collar-chained ape (monkey), commemorating the legendary medieval event where a household ape rescued the infant Earl of Kildare from a castle fire. Below, the motto scroll displays Crom abú, the historic Geraldine war cry referencing Crom Castle. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms for the Earls of Kildare and Dukes of Leinster, recorded in the Calendar of Carew Manuscripts and Burke's Peerage.
