The origin of the name Fischer
Fischer is an ancient Germanic occupational surname meaning "fisherman" (derived from Old High German fiscari). Widespread across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Alsace, families bearing the Fischer name held prominent civic positions within medieval trade guilds, municipal councils, and patrician circles. Codified early in central European registers, the surname appears in 12th-century Bavarian and Swabian city charters.
The symbolism of the Fischer coat of arms
Visually distinctive, the Fischer coat of arms features a field divided horizontally: the upper black section is charged with a golden lion passant guardant (walking while facing forward), while the lower section features an argent / silver or white fish swimming over blue water set against a red background. In classical heraldry, the black field and golden lion symbolise wisdom, constancy, and noble vigilance, while the fish and blue water represent aquatic abundance, watchfulness, and honest labor. Positioned above the shield, the crest features a golden lion holding a silver fish in its paws.
