The origin of the name Finnigan

Finnigan (and its spelling variant Finnigan) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Fionnagáin, stemming from fionn, meaning "fair-haired" or "bright." The Ó Fionnagáin sept established two primary ancestral territories in Ireland: one in Connacht (along the borders of County Galway and Roscommon) and another in Ulster (County Monaghan and Louth). Renowned as clan chieftains, scholars, and churchmen, the family was recorded extensively in early Irish monastic records and administrative land surveys.

The symbolism of the Finnigan coat of arms

Commanding and martial, the Finnigan coat of arms features a red shield charged with a central upright wavy silver sword set between two argent / silver or white lions rampant combatant (facing each other in battle). In classical heraldry, the red shield symbolises martial valour and fortitude, while the wavy sword represents justice, truth, and fierce defense of clan lands. The two combatant silver lions denote heroic bravery, leadership, and steadfast alliance. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden falcon with spread wings. Below, the motto scroll displays Malo mori quam foedari, translating to "I would rather die than be dishonoured." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms at Dublin Castle and catalogued in historic Irish armorial registries.
