The origin of the name Figueroa

Figueroa is an ancient Spanish and Galician noble habitational surname derived from figueira (meaning "fig tree"). Originating during the 12th century in Abegondo (A Coruña, Galicia), the lineage traces back to the feudal Lords of Figueroa who constructed formidable manorial towers and defended northwestern Iberia. Expanding across Castile, Extremadura, and Andalusia during the Reconquista, members of the House of Figueroa served as Grandees of Spain, military commanders, and diplomats to royal courts.

The symbolism of the Figueroa coat of arms

Visually pure and canting, the Figueroa coat of arms features a radiant gold shield charged with five green fig leaves arranged in a saltire pattern (2-1-2). In Iberian heraldry, the gold shield symbolises generosity, nobility, and elevation of mind, while the five green fig leaves serve as an ancient canting symbol (figueira) representing peace, renewal, fruitfulness, and ancestral land tenure. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was documented in medieval Galician and Castilian nobility rolls and registered in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Sir Suer Yáñez de Figueroa (14th Century): Galician knight and patriarch who expanded the House of Figueroa into Extremadura.
Doña María de Figueroa (16th Century): Spanish noblewoman and benefactor recorded in Andalusian civic and religious rolls.
Gómez Suárez de Figueroa 'Inca Garcilaso de la Vega' (1539–1616): Famed chronicler and writer of Spanish-Inca heritage who authored landmark early histories of the Americas.
