The origin of the name Fields

Fields (and its variant Fieldss) is an ancient English topographic surname derived from the Old English feld, meaning "open country," "cleared land," or "pasture." Originally assumed by families residing on prominent agricultural estates or cleared manorial lands, the lineage established early seats across Yorkshire, Hertfordshire, and Gloucestershire following the 1066 Norman Conquest. Codified early in feudal records, the name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Hugo de la Feld).

The symbolism of the Fields coat of arms

Commanding and agricultural, the Fields coat of arms features a black shield charged with an engrailed argent / silver or white chevron set between three golden wheatsheaves (garbs). In classical heraldry, the black shield denotes wisdom, dignity, and constancy, while the engrailed silver chevron represents architectural protection and knightly defense. The three golden wheatsheaves symbolise agricultural abundance, hospitality, and the reward of noble labor. The formal recognition of this coat of arms was recorded in the 16th-century Heralds' Visitations of Yorkshire and catalogued in Burke's General Armory.

Historical figures

John Fields (c. 1520–1587): Famed English Renaissance mathematician, astronomer, and author who published the first Copernican tables in England.
Mary Fields (17th Century): English landowner and civic benefactor recorded in Hertfordshire parish rolls.
Nathaniel Fields (1587–1633): Celebrated Jacobean dramatist and actor who performed with Shakespeare's company.
