The origin of the name Field
Field is an ancient Anglo-Norman topographic surname derived from the Old English feld, originally denoting a family residing near open, cleared land or agricultural pasture. The family traces its lineage to Sir Hubert de la Feld, an Anglo-Norman knight who accompanied William the Conqueror during the 1066 Invasion and was granted extensive knight's fees across Yorkshire, Hertfordshire, and Gloucestershire. Early recorded appearances of the surname include Richard de la Felde in the 1189 Pipe Rolls of Oxfordshire and Thomas atte Felde in the 1273 Rotuli Hundredorum (Hundred Rolls) during the reign of King Edward I.
The symbolism of the Field coat of arms
The Field coat of arms features a sable (black) shield charged with an engrailed argent (silver) chevron set between three golden garbs (wheat sheaves). In classical heraldry, sable represents wisdom, solemn dignity, and constancy under trial, while argent signifies peace, sincerity, and moral purity.
The heraldic chevron signifies protection, architectural faith, and noble service, with its engrailed edge adding distinct ancestral character. The three golden garbs symbolize agricultural abundance, fertility, grand hospitality, and the rightful reward of peaceful labor.
Rising above the shield, the crest displays elegant black and silver feather plumes set upon a coronet and torse. Framed by fluid black and silver mantling, this ancient coat of arms is officially cataloged in Sir Bernard Burke’s General Armory and historic English Heralds' Visitations.
