The origin of the name Ferguson
Ferguson is an ancient Scottish clan surname (Clan Ferguson / Clann Fhearghuis) meaning "son of Fergus" (derived from the Gaelic personal name Fearghus, from fear, meaning "man," and gus, meaning "force" or "vigour"). Tracing their origin to early Dalriadic Gaelic monarchs, the clan established two primary historic branches: Highland Ferguson of Atholl (Perthshire) and Lowland Ferguson of Kilkerran (Ayrshire) and Dumfriesshire. Codified early in royal charters, the clan held formidable castles and was recorded in the 1296 Ragman Rolls.
The symbolism of the Ferguson coat of arms
Visually striking, the Ferguson coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with three golden boars' heads erased set around a central golden buckle. In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield symbolises loyalty, truth, and devotion, while the golden boars' heads represent fierce bravery, knightly hospitality, and forest lordship. The central golden buckle denotes structural unity, fidelity, and steadfastness under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green Scottish thistle, the national emblem of Scotland representing resilience and protection. Below, the motto scroll displays Dulcius ex asperis, translating to "Sweeter after difficulties." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (1672) and documented in Stodart's Scottish Arms.
