The origin of the name Farrell

Farrell (O'Farrell) is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Fearghail, stemming from fear (meaning "man") and gal (meaning "valour"), translating to "man of valour." The Ó Fearghail sept were royal princes and dynastic rulers of Annaly, a vast medieval kingdom covering most of modern County Longford and parts of Westmeath. From their primary stronghold at Longford Castle (originally RathMór), the clan commanded regional trade, defended West Leinster, and was documented extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters.

The symbolism of the Farrell coat of arms

Commanding and regal, the Farrell coat of arms features a vibrant green shield charged with a central golden lion rampant, symbolising supreme bravery, heroism, and noble leadership over Gaelic territories. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a running greyhound (coursing) wearing a golden crown, representing swift vigilance, loyalty, and royal favor. Below, the motto scroll displays Cú reabtha, translating from Irish to "The tearing hound." The formal recognition of this coat of arms was registered in the Ulster Office of Arms and recorded in historic Irish armorial rolls.

Historical figures

Cacht Ní Fearghail (12th Century): Gaelic noblewoman and patron recorded in early Irish monastic annals.
Finola O'Farrell (15th Century): Chieftain's wife celebrated in the Annals of Lough Cé for her generous hospitality to scholars.
