Celebrate your family heritage with a gift to cherish – the Evans Family Crest framed and printed on museum-quality matte paper. Beautifully illustrated. Carefully researched. Uniquely personal.

The beautifully elegant Evans coat of arms you see on these prints consists of a blue shield featuring a single gold lion. In the conventions of Welsh heraldry, the colour blue signifies loyalty, truth, and vigilance, while gold represents generosity and prosperity. The lion rampant is a classical heraldic charge used to symbolise fortitude, strength, and courage. Positioned above the shield is the family crest consisting of a stag, a traditional emblem denoting administrative wisdom, political skill, and a peaceful disposition that resists conflict unless directly provoked. At the base of the display is a banner bearing the Latin motto Pro libertate patriae, which translates as "For the liberty of my country."

These specific arms are historically attributed to Llewelyn Aurdorchog (Llewelyn of the Golden Torc), an 11th-century Lord of Ial (Yale) and Prime Minister to Gruffydd ap Llywelyn, the King of Wales.

Because Welsh heraldry operated independently of the English system prior to the 15th century, these arms were borne by prescription and ancestral right long before being formalized by a royal herald. The design achieved official institutional recognition by the Crown when it was audited and recorded during the Heraldic Visitations of Wales conducted by deputy herald Lewys Dwnn between 1586 and 1613. These visitations served as the official state verification of Welsh lineages and their respective armorial bearings under the authority of the College of Arms.

As the fixed surname Evans stabilized across Wales, several prominent families recorded their descent from the lineage of Llewelyn Aurdorchog, establishing ancestral seats in Flintshire, Denbighshire, and Montgomeryshire. Notable historical branches using this blue and gold shield include the Evans of Llaneurgain (Northop) and the Evans of Rhyd-y-carw.

The addition of the stag crest and the Latin motto Pro libertate patriae ("For the liberty of my country") became firmly associated with branches of the Evans family that rose to political prominence during the 17th and 18th centuries. This specific armorial combination is frequently identified with the descendants of the Welsh Evans lines that migrated to Ireland during the reign of Charles I, settling extensively in County Limerick and County Cork. A notable individual of this closely related line was George Evans (died 1707), a Member of Parliament for Limerick and a stanch political figure during the Williamite War, whose family line was later elevated to the Irish peerage as Barons Carbery, permanently cementing the Evans name within high-ranking British and Irish administrative history.
